We're Lovin' It?

We're Lovin' It?

New York city is the first in the country to implement a policy to help fight against obesity and diabetes.  Chain restaurants with more than fifteen locations must post calories next to menu items (this includes drive thru) or else face a $2,000 fine.

The initiative is Mayor Bloomberg's way of assisting New Yorkers in making smarter decisions about our diet.  I have personally found it very useful, and sometimes deflating, to know exactly how many calories are in my food. However, doesn't it say something about our country and ourselves, that we need the government to help us stop being so fat?  It isn't like there was absolutely no way we could have figured out how many calories was in that basket of fries.  Most restaurants post calories online.

I suspect that those who enjoy KFC will continue to eat it and those who have always been mindful about their caloric intact will welcome the ease in which they can continue to do so.  But if one person realizes that a Frappucino has more calories than a cheeseburger and opt for water and salad instead...it will be a small step in the right direction.

  • Yeah, WE WON!!!! Long Live the Healthy and Strong willed! Down with evil empire corporations feasting off of our gluttony and lack of self control. Death to those who would gladly profit while the innocent suffer & perish by their monstrous hand only to look the other way when social irresponsibility sets its way to frame itself on the guilty party's shoulders. David finally slayed Goliath.

  • Wow, though I don't share the enthusiasm of the previous poster, that sounds pretty awesome. The minimum 15 joints sounds a bit high, I would make it any chain store. I can't imagine the caloric tests are THAT expensive. I think you're right, people probably won't change their eating habits. Maybe this law should come with some sort of education portion to understand the numbers.

  • I was just in NY and stopped at a Dunkin Donuts for coffee. It was funny to look at all the donuts, and thinking about ordering: "Yeah, I'd like the 350 calorie donut and the 420 calorie muffin." I definitely stuck with my cup of coffee!

  • I think this is definitely a step in the right direction. Although it would be great if everyone was aware of the fact that the biggest contributor to inflammation (the leading cause of aging and disease) is fast food. We're literally killing ourselves every time we eat it - regardless of the calorie content. Great story!
